Okay, shoot. What do you really want to tell me? Cut the "voice from the past" shit and just say it.

That's the creepiest frakking thing I've heard in six months.

Because I'd rather talk before CONDOR puts us on a mission together.

[This is the silliest thing she's ever frakking done. But -- CONDOR? "I need to see you?" It was ringing all the wrong bells in her head and the sooner she found out that this was some weirdo on the internet messing around, the better she could sleep at night.]

[She dials the number the stranger gave her.]

[Luckily for him and unluckily for her, it's not. There's a stillness in the moment before he speaks; he savors the sound of her voice. Whatever happens next, what he says first is absolutely true:]

[Ice slams into her blood like a shotgun blast. A thousand thoughts run through her mind but she locks them up for later, narrows herself down to the immediacy of the situation. It could be a trick, yes, but knowing Leoben, that would be the one thing that wasn’t a trick. She considers hanging up, but then she’d still lose, he’d still know everything and she nothing.]

[She has to figure out how to gain the upper hand.]

Wow, Leoben, you must be pretty lonely to come all this way to see me. Miss all your toaster buddies? What’d you do, power yourself down for a couple hundred thousand years?

[He smiles to himself. Is it possible that he's changed more than she has? He wouldn't have thought so... but then, maybe strangely enough, he rarely reflects on his own past, the journey he's already taken. The past is for his people in a broader sense. History. Knowledge. Understanding. Culture. For him, it's something to grow like a second skin and then shed so as to better cut through the waters.]

Something like that. I know you won't want to believe this, but I sent God a prayer, and He answered it.

[She’s had enough of prayers and gods for a lifetime, which strikes her as particularly funny, for some reason, and she chokes back a laugh.]

I don’t care how you’re deciding to ruin my day. I just want to know why. I thought it was finished. I did my job.

[She hopes it was finished. All of this has happened before . . . but scripture here doesn’t have that verse. Kara’d checked.]
